Join us for the fourth webinar in our Extended INSIGHT Series. We give INSIGHT speakers a spotlight to delve into their area of interest while also providing ample room for discussion with the audience. This time, Dr. med. Umberto Pannaci will discuss how psychedelic research findings can increase our understanding of REM sleep function.

Most mood disorders are associated with sleep abnormalities, particularly rapid eye movement (REM) alterations, suggesting an intimate relationship between sleep and emotion.
REM sleep is suggested to be very important for emotional processing. It, therefore, has been suggested to play a key role in major depression and post‐traumatic stress disorder ﴾PTSD﴿ in particular.

Interestingly, in both REM sleep and during psilocybin administration, it has been suggested that the amygdala represents the neural correlate of emotional processing.
Several studies show a strong relation between amygdala hyperactivity and both negative mood states and clinical depression. On the other hand, downregulation of amygdala activity is an important mechanism by which SSRI’s exert their antidepressant effect.
Do psychedelics exert their antidepressant effect also by decreasing amygdala activity?
Instead of responding with yes or no, we propose an alternative hypothesis: effective emotional regulation – facilitated by REM sleep or psychedelics – might be divided into two phases.

How can this hypothesis help us understand the mechanisms of action of both REM sleep and psychedelic compounds? Can psychedelics improve the quality of our REM sleep?
For these and more questions, join us to discuss with Dr. med Umberto Pannacci.
