N-Dimensional Space, Sentience, and Psychedelics
Could a certain cognizance of n-dimensional space enhance our understanding of consciousness, and could certain psychedelic mindspaces facilitate such enhanced cognition?
In modern mathematics and physics it is commonplace to consider space not to be limited to the three dimensions of width, height, and depth. Despite Kant’s early assertion of the arbitrariness of space as merely three dimensional, philosophy has largely neglected such n-dimensionality – to the potential detriment of our progress on the mind-matter problem.
To address this neglect, philosopher of mind Peter Sjöstedt-H, PhD, will first explore the theoretical sentience of one- and two-dimensional beings – via thinkers such as Fechner, Clifford, Ouspensky, and Abbott (of Flatland fame) – so to contextualize our perception and conception of three-dimensional space as a common human, all too human perceptual limitation. It will thereby be seen how we might cognize a hyperspace (a space of more than three dimensions).
We shall consider whether such a hyperspace may be real. The notion that reality has more than three dimensions may have explanatory power not only in physics, but in consciousness studies too. Contra-Cartesian views that matter and mind cannot be simply distinguished as spatial and non-spatial will be examined through philosophers such as William James, Bertrand Russell, and A. N. Whitehead – so to reconceptualize the spaces of imagination, dreams, and psychedelic worlds. Of special significance here will be the work of neuroscientist and philosopher John R. Smythies, who administered mescaline to C. D. Broad, H. H. Price, and Aldous Huxley. The Broad-Smythies Theory is that physical and mental spaces are distinct cross–sections of a single, higher-dimensional space. If this be the case, we ask whether certain psychedelics steer us to see this ‘broader’ reality – might we fall outside our space to touch the tesseract?
About Peter Sjöstedt-H.
Dr. Peter Sjöstedt-H. is an Anglo-Scandinavian philosopher of mind and a metaphysician who specializes in the thought of Whitehead and Nietzsche, and in fields pertaining to panpsychism and altered states of sentience. Following his degree in Continental Philosophy at the University of Warwick, he became a Philosophy lecturer in London for six years and has now passed his PhD (on ‘Pansentient Monism’, examined by Galen Strawson and Joel Krueger) at the University of Exeter, where he also teaches philosophy modules and writing skills. Peter is the author of Noumenautics, the TEDx Talker on ‘psychedelics and consciousness’, and he is inspiration to the inhuman philosopher Marvel Superhero, Karnak.
In the words of futurist, philosopher and pop star Alexander Bard: ‘One of our favourite contemporary philosophers, Peter Sjöstedt-H … think a psychedelic Nietzsche’.
The Forum Bewusstseinskultur includes events that address a general public. Usually there is no or low requirement for technical terminology. The Forum Bewusstseinskultur strives for connecting science and culture. We seek to establish an evidence-based culture of consciousness. The Forum Bewusstseinskultur integrates first and third person perspectives on consciousness and particularly the psychedelic experience.
