Event in the MIND Academy’s Forum Bewusstseinskultur
“Scientific research programs on consciousness and its neurofunctional correlates could be greatly optimized if researchers were well travelled in phenomenal state space, if they were cultivated in terms of the richness of their own inner experience as well.“
Prof. Dr. Thomas Metzinger
The Forum Bewusstseinskultur includes events that address a general public. Usually there is no or low requirement for technical terminology. The Forum Bewusstseinskultur strives for connecting science and culture. We seek to establish an evidence-based culture of consciousness. The Forum Bewusstseinskultur integrates first and third person perspectives on consciousness and particularly the psychedelic experience. Background: Self-medication and professional treatment
While there is growing evidence for therapist-facilitated psychedelic treatments professionals should not ignore or dismiss the widespread practice of self-medication. Understanding the psychology of people who treat themselves implies to understand why mainstream psychotherapies often fail. And this is important for professionals and everybody who has personally experienced trauma – and wants to improve professional therapies.
Iris Andres will provide a biographical reflection on her own processes through trauma. Afterwards Dr. med. Andrea Jungaberle will engage into a panel discussion with Iris Andres.
This is an event within the Forum Bewusstseinskultur integrating first and third person perspectives on the psychedelic experience.
Working through childhood trauma: Self-empowerment through expanded states of consciousness
How did psychedelic self-medication in severe conditions like chronic PTSD work for myself? What was essential for my healing and what blocked it before? After years of therapy and diagnosed with PTSD resulting from childhood trauma, I accidentally bumped into the healing potential of expanded states of consciousness. I began to explore what my soul and mind had to offer with the help of various substances and techniques. Step by step I overcame my symptoms – most of the time alone, without a therapist guiding or helping me through the sessions and integration of my experiences. My talk will be about this personal healing journey and the question that was always in my mind: How can I use the experience I am having right now to learn and heal a bit more?
Impulse presentation: Dr. med Andrea Jungaberle will introduce us to MAPS’ protocol on professional MDMA-assisted psychotherapy as a tool in treating therapy resistant posttraumatic stress disorder. Having participated in an early therapy training by MAPS on MDMA therapy herself, she will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of a placebo controlled, manualized protocol and the possible pitfalls of self-treatement alike.
Panel: The panel discussion between Iris Andres and Dr. med. Andrea Jungaberle will deepen the discourse on individualized vs. standardized approaches in psychedelic therapy and self treatment. And the two panelists will look into the possible difficulties and dangers of self-treatment without professional supervision.

Iris Andres – After school I did a training as therapist for alternative herbal medicine. Opening my own practice failed for a number of reasons. I started a training as nurse but quit it after one year; then I did a 3 year training as lab technician. Currently I work as lab technician and I’ll start another therapist training this year, “breath therapist”, which is focused on psychological issues, integrating the body into the therapeutic process. Since 2015 I’m also in the training to become a facilitator for Holotropic Breathwork, I’m almost finished. A year ago I joined a harm reduction group in my area (Safer Dance Basel); we spread neutral, fact-based information about drugs on party and festival sites, trip-sit people who are physiologically safe but overwhelmed by their experience, and occasionally we have a mobile laboratory with us to provide a drug checking service.
