Attitudes Towards the Acceptance and Implementation of Psilocybin for the Treatment of Mental Disorders

Study period: February 2023 – December 2023.

This research project funded by the German federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) aims at generating insights into the knowledge status and attitudes towards psychedelic therapies among medical professionals (doctors, psychologists), patients, cost bearers such as health insurances, politicians, and the public. The approval of psilocybin and MDMA as medications as part of a therapy within the healthcare system is expected in the next few years. Research projects are well advanced; however, the implementation of these therapies needs to be shaped by society so that their potentials can be realized and risks minimized. Against this background, with this study we want to collect information about attitudes and perceptions, ideas and wishes within the population.

We work with the following research methods:

1. Online Questionnaire. An anonymized online survey on the topic of “Psilocybin as a new form of treatment in medicine and psychotherapy.” Click here to take part in the survey (in German):

2. Focus Group Interviews. The topic of “Psilocybin as a new form of treatment in medicine and psychotherapy” will be discussed in small groups. Hereby we want to get an impression about existing opinions, concerns, wishes and potential obstacles regarding the implementation of psilocybin-assisted therapy.

The focus group interviews will take place in the rooms of MIND Foundation gGmbH and online. They will be held in German.

If you are interested in taking part in a focus group (German) register here.

Follow-up information:

Gründer & Jungaberle (2021): Information on the potential of psychedelics for mental health care.

Schmidt et al. (2022): An explorative investigation of attitudes of mental health experts towards psilocybin.
