Introducing our next uniMIND Central Session: “Unlocking fungi secrets: psilocybin vs. full-spectrum psychedelic mushroom extract –
same or different?”

Dive into the intriguing world of psychedelic mushrooms beyond psilocybin as we unravel the potential therapeutic benefits of compounds like aeruginascin, baeocystin, and more.

Join us in dissecting recent research that challenges the conventional understanding of psychedelic therapy and explores the nuanced effects of naturally occurring compounds on psychiatric disorders. Let’s uncover how these compounds may hold the key to unlocking new avenues for treatment and understanding the neuroplasticity underlying their effects.

Together with first-author Orr Shahar, the discussion will be based on Orr et al.’s recent Nature publication:

Effect of chemically synthesized psilocybin and psychedelic mushroom extract on molecular and metabolic profiles in mouse brain

About the format:

uniMIND Central Sessions are part of the global uniMIND journal club network. During the semester, the Central Sesssions take place monthly, each fourth Wednesday of the month, usually at 7 pm CET/CEST.

For each session, we invite authors of research papers from a wide variety of disciplines. While the session is mostly guided by a moderator, all attendees are invited to actively partake through comments or questions. This is a great opportunity to learn about the processes behind and between the literary lines and to get in touch with researchers!

Come one, come all – but please prepare the assigned paper.

This session will be hosted by: Allen Fishman

About the author:

Orr Shahar is a research scientist who is fascinated with mushrooms and the potential of naturally occurring traditional psychedelic medicines for the advancement of our species. He began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s in Animal Sciences where he was involved in a lab that looked at ways to increase medicinal compounds in mushroom fruit bodies based on manipulating growth parameters. He went on to complete his Master’s degree in Biotechnology where he tested extracts from a wide range of fungi fruit bodies on cancer pathway inhibition. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD in Medical Neurobiology under the guidance of prof. Bernard Lerer at the Biological Psychiatry Laboratory and Hadassah BrainLabs – Center for Psychedelic Research, Hadassah Medical Center, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Their work focuses on pre-clinical mental health-related behavioral studies as they try to deepen our understanding of the underlying mechanisms induced by psychedelics through pharmacological and molecular assays.
